This beautiful box was painted by the very talented Palekh artist Nikolai Kritov. This large, colorful box depicts a traditional scene of a young couple enjoying a troika ride through the Russian countryside. The horses are painted in traditional orange, white, and red tempera paints that look so beautiful against the black background. Beautiful winter scene with a winter troika (three horse sleigh) speeding through the Russian countryside. A maiden hides from the snowstorm in the sleigh while a driver encourages the horses. Gold paint is used to detail the sledge, the characters, costumes and the horses harnesses, manes and tails.

The hinged box is approximately 6.25" x 4" x 1.25" and has a very intricate border floral ornament around the sides.
