This beautiful box was painted by Boris Shavirin.
The box shows major character from popular fairy-tale "Snowmaiden" or "Snegurochka".
The scene painted on the box's lid depicts Snowmaiden with a bird in a winter forest. The Snow Maiden (Snegurochka) is depicted in many Russian fairy tales; and in this lacquer box Boris Shavyrin uses winter forest to show off her elaborate costume shining with gold and matching the northern sunset.
The palette incorporates blue, gray and white oils as the action takes place in winter, with addition of gold paints to give a feeling of magic and splendor. The effect of festivity is strengthened by the pieces of mother-of-pear inlaid into the costume of this beautiful Snowmaiden. The branches of trees covered with white fluffy snow, that are also expressively painted.
Rich gold line frames the composition.The box's sides imitates the color of blue marble; the bottom is black, while the interior of the box is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The box has a hinge to the left from the scene and rests on a flat base. It is signed with the artist's name.
