This classic cylinder-shaped box was created by the talented artist from Kholui Serov. Here we see a pair of beautiful swans in the midst of migration as they fly over the island of Kizhi. Kizhi is a small island resting on the northeast side of Lake Onega. The island is home to an outdoor museum of northern wooden architecture. The collection of structures consists of churches, chapels, bell towers, peasant houses, barns, windmills, and bathhouses - all collected from around the Onega region to illustrate the unique styles of architecture found in the Russian north.
The most remarkable creation on the island of Kizhi is the Transfiguration Cathedral. Built in 1714, the grand Cathedral stands today, with not one single nail holding it in place. To paint this scene the artist has used mainly earth-tones. Browns and greens are the most prevalent colors in the landscape, which create a rustic atmosphere for the painting. Gold is used to paint the polished crosses on the church cupolas, and to add glimmering highlights throughout the composition.
Gold and aluminum filigree patterns are used to frame the composition, and also to decorate the sides of the box. The box is constructed out of high-grade paper-mache. The box is not hinged and rests flat. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer and interior is painted with red lacquer. Approx. 2.25"x 2.25"x3".
