An antique Russian icon depicting scenes from Christ's resurrection and decent into Hell. Very fine detail in each of 16 complex scenes. A superb example of iconography from the Mstera School. Made in Russia circa early 19th century. This icon measures 15.5" wide and 17" tall. This is a very fine painting with a multitude of figures in rich, vibrant colors. The painting is exemplary of the miniaturization found in both traditional and contemporary Mstiora art. Descriptions of each scene are written in old Cyrillic in the surrounding border. Hand painted and constructed in the traditional manner with egg tempera on gesso over wood. Overall in excellent condition after minor restoration.
