It was carved by extremely talented King Island Inupiauq (Eskimo) master carver Mark Seeganna - a member of the local King Island native Eskimo Inupiaq tribe.
Walrus ivory comes from walruses of the Arctic regions of Alaska. Under U.S. law, only Alaska Native peoples are legally permitted to harvest walrus through subsistence hunting, a tradition protected for cultural and survival purposes. The ivory used in carvings is sourced and worked by Native artisans, continuing generations of Arctic craftsmanship and heritage.
