Product Overview
This lovely scene, showing some ships sailing out to sea, was created by Smirnova from the village of Fedoskino. The water, particularly in the foreground right in front of the ship, looks strikingly realistic. The clouds look light and fluffy, while the hills in the distance have a harder texture. The scene is quite calm and peaceful. The drama in the work comes not from violent waves or a raging storm, but from the light falling across the ships and water. The scene is painted on the top of the mother-of-pearl to simulate the effect of sunlight illuminating the clouds. This shell has greenish and pink undertones that suit the rich, warm palette nicely.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. This hinged box approximately 4" x 4" x 1.75"
