This is a wonderful vintage Hooper bay Native American Yupik Alaskan woven basket. A beautiful basket with red and brown butterflies. This medium weave lidded, oval basket is woven from wild rye beach grass (taperrnat). It is decorated with complex combination of geometric designs of red and blue and green and blue dyed grass and butterflies of red and blue dyed grass. It is expertly woven, tightly coiled, symmetrical and well balanced. It is 8” high by 18 ¾” in circumference. It is in excellent condition.
The natural grass has a nice golden patina acquired over 50 + years. Artist unknown. C.1970's
